Jim Camp lives in Hays County with
his wife, Elizabeth, an Engineer for AT&T Wireless, and they have three
children: Justin (15), Michelle (11), and Caitlin (8). For over twenty years,
he has successfully managed a college publishing business.
In addition to his family and business,
Jim has worked with citizens and small cities in the mid-1980's to petition
the state for an election to create the Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer Conservation
District (BS/EACD). He also co-founded Texans for Aquifer Protection and brought
business and community leaders together for the voter approved BSEACD in 1987.
Jim served on the first BSEACD Policy and Technical Advisory Committees 1987-89
and helped create District's Mission Statement, Rules & Bylaws, Well Construction
Standards and Conservation and Drought Plans. In 1986, Jim was called on to
serve on the City of Austin's Comprehensive Watershed Ordinance Task Force to
help developers and environmental representatives reach consensus to strengthen
Austin area ordinances to protect water quality. Mr. Camp worked with Democrats
and Republicans in Texas House and Senate to get Edward Aquifer Rules established
for Travis County in the late 1980's.
Since joining the Board, Jim has
worked diligently to support staff in their scientific endeavors such as the
Dye Trace Study, water quality analysis, stream flow measurements, and karst
terrain studies in the aquifer recharge zone. Mr. Camp has been a strong supporter
of the District's efforts to develop a scientific "Sustainable Yield"
model to calculate aquifer storage, especially in drought conditions.
Jim also rewrote the Board's resolution
to state that the Longhorn Partners gasoline pipeline should be rerouted away
from the aquifer area and that an environmental impact study be done as required
by federal law. Mr. Camp has worked for greater District efforts in conservation
and education about smart water usage. Jim helped build consensus in the Buda
area on water quality issues and helped write the historic Buda Water Quality
Ordinance to protect Buda's water supply. Mr. Camp continues to support Household
Chemical Waste Collection in the community for proper disposal and greater aquifer
protection.
